Why Breastfeed?
Most parents start out wanting to breastfeed – but by 6 to 8 weeks, fewer than one in three babies are still receiving any breastmilk. That drop-off often happens not because parents want to stop, but because the right support is not there when they need it. The average rate of breastfeeding beyond 6-8 weeks is around 52% as of 2025, however in County Durham and Sunderland it is as low as 30%. I am here to fill that gap, offering gentle, personalised care that helps you and your baby thrive from the very first feed, through those precious early weeks and beyond.
Breastfeeding in County Durham and Sunderland – A Health Investment That Lasts a Lifetime
Choosing to breastfeed isn’t just a momentary decision – it’s a powerful investment in your baby’s lifelong health. Recent NHS data reveals a striking truth: babies exclusively breastfed in the first six months experience significantly fewer hospital admissions for common illnesses like respiratory infections, ear infections, and gastrointestinal diseases. These protective effects don’t just fade after the early weeks; research shows they continue to shield children for years, lowering risks of serious conditions such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, obesity, allergic rhinitis, and even childhood leukaemia.
Breastfed babies under 12 months are also dramatically less likely to develop necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) – a severe, sometimes life-threatening gut condition. In premature babies, breastmilk can mean the difference between a smooth recovery and weeks in intensive care. These benefits aren’t only about avoiding illness; they mean fewer GP visits, reduced time in hospital, and more time enjoying those precious milestones at home.
A Local Difference You Can See in the Numbers
In both County Durham and Sunderland, hospital and GP data paints a clear picture: breastfeeding is a local health powerhouse. Babies fed exclusively on breastmilk from birth have up to 50% fewer hospital admissions for respiratory infections and over 60% lower risk of gastrointestinal diseases in their first year. This isn’t just about statistics – it’s about fewer sleepless nights worrying about your baby’s fever, fewer days juggling hospital visits, and more time focusing on bonding and recovery.
The benefits go beyond physical health. Breastfeeding strengthens emotional connection, builds your confidence as a parent, and gives your baby the very best nutritional start – tailored to their needs in every feed. Whether you’re expecting, in the early weeks, or months into your journey, support is here in your community to help you achieve your feeding goals with confidence.
Breast Surgery, Augmentation, Low Supply & Medication
Breast surgeries (such as reductions, implants, or biopsies) and certain underlying conditions can sometimes impact milk supply, but they don’t automatically mean breastfeeding isn’t possible. With the right support, many mothers are still able to feed at the breast, express milk, or use combination approaches to nourish their babies. I can help assess feeding and supply, offer troubleshooting strategies, and refer on to specialist colleagues where needed.
Whether you’re hoping to use your own milk, safely source donor milk, or have a mixed-feeding approach, we work together to create a plan that works for you, your baby and your lifestyle.
